This is a completely different plan, but....

I dunno about XMMS, but theirs a 'Keyz' plugin for noatun 
supports mapping commands to global keys. (Keyz is built 
into noatun on Mandrake 9.)

That is, I've setup ctrl-alt-right to "next song" and 
ctrl-alt-right to be last song.. This way, I can be writing 
an email, chatting etc, and don't have to page over to skip 
ahead or mute the sound to answer the phone..... 

Mapping the IR remote straight to global keys makes more 
sense than locking it down to one or two apps..   That way, 
you can end up with pretty much any functionality you have 
at the console. I haven't searched, but I bet there's a 
daemon or something to do just this. 

That is, use an IR program that acts like a keyboard wedge, 
and converts all incoming IR to keyboard input based on a 
lookup table, then map the keyboard setting to global keys 
that you define in your mp3 player and other home control 
apps.
