I got mysql up and running immediately. I did queries immediately.
Their manual is very good. (I've had experience with Microsoft SQL,
Informix (unix), Foxpro, btrieve, etc.)
When I tried to get postgresql up and running, it was a total flop. I
was too stupid to be able to do a single query. I spent several hours
reading manual pages and trying to use the database. I gave up. This was
on Mandrake, with the installed one that came with the distro.
We use MySQL in our maildeflector project, and average about 50 queries
per second, for months at a time. No issues there. About 1/3 of those
queries are writes.
Transactions are now part of MySQL, but we don't use them in our
situation.
