I feel your pain. A drive of mine that was about a year old decided to
bite it earlier this month. The partition with the bad sectors was
reiserfs. Thankfully I was able to build a copy of the image using
dd_rescue (http://www.garloff.de/kurt/linux/ddrescue/), and I've also
used myrescue (http://myrescue.sf.net). For days I attempted to
repair/rebuild the fs trying different things like 
reiserfsck --fix-fixable and reiserfsck --rebuild-tree, but it was too
severely damaged to fully recover it. I was however able to recover most
of the data on it, not my mail though. =/ 

It's pretty painless to upgrade ext2 to ext3 and afaik you get all the 
goodness of ext2 plus journalling. Just a thought, as long as you're 
thinking about using ext2.
