[NTLUG:Discuss] Suggestions for webcam

Hi folks,

Believe it or not, I've never tried to add a webcam. I pulled out
an article by Marcel Gagne in LInux Journal, and read his main tip:
Make sure you have at least a 2.4.something kernal, since most
webcams coming out are USB. I have SuSE 8.1, so thought I'd be
ok to go. I got a simple basic Creative Labs WebCam PC
Camera -- and *then* after not having any luck making it go (tried
using xawtv), decided to browse around the net for hardware
compatibility info. Then I got confused. The SuSE site's hardware
compatibility search engine is terrible, IMHO. You have to just about
know the exact piece of hardware model and serial number to search on it.
I won't go into all the gorey details.

Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions on a nice, inexpensive
webcam with good linux support? I don't need lots of resolution, bells
and whistles, etc; I just want to use this as a security camera.

Thanks in advance for info.

/dennis
