I use some netmon equivalents in linux for this. I always have gkrellm
up, so I added the tcphealth and multiping plugins (I had to hack tcphealth
for gkrellm2). It is quite obvious then exactly where the network problem
is.
I also use a generic dec tulip eth card, and there have been times when I
was blaming the ISP for lost connectivity, because I could run tcpdump on
the interface and see incoming traffic but my gateway wouldn't ping.
Restarting the network didn't help. Reloading the tulip module didn't help
(altho it has sometimes). A warm boot didn't work, and finally a cold
boot did! Some kind of hardware reset of the card was required. Maybe
Donald Becker could have reset the card, but I couldn't... : (
