Call off the "hounds" - I proclaim the filesystem "totally crapped" -
turning this lemon into an "opportunity" to do a fresh install on RH 7.3
(up from 7.1), and not try to cobble together a RAID out of a disk and a
part of a disk (as the previous installer did) - I lean toward that
"RAID" as a strong suspect in the initial problem, though it is always
possible it was just me.
