AFAIK the /etc/hosts file only contains mappings for hostname to ip. It would not accept ip tp mac address mappings. For doing that you will have to use the arp program.
In the example joseph gave, ip 127.0.0.1 would map to x1-6-00-90-c9-04-42-7e as hostname.
That is if you say <http://x1-6-00-90-c9-04-42-7e> http://x1-6-00-90-c9-04-42-7e you will connect to your local computer.
Correct me if i am wrong.

I thought that that was a MAC address too... but a MAC address is
6 parts... that one that he listed is 8 parts.
When your ISP assigns you an Address, it should be resolvable.
