I don't have a domain, but I don't think the email would be 
an issue now.

I don't think they aren't as strict as they once were.  I had heard 
that at one point they would not even let you put a non-Verizon
domain as a <Reply-To>.  I wouldn't have been able to live with that.
I work out of a home office and I am one of the few employees that
isn't either on site or on a site on the WAN, so they didn't want
to poke a couple of holes in the firewall just for me. (And I surely
didn't want to do email through Citrix!)  

So the company forwards my email to me, and I send out company email 
through a Verizon account.  The "Received:" line does include the
Verizon email address, but all of the important fields show the
business address.  They probably started allowing this when they
started requiring SMTP Auth.
