Now, I've been living in LA for 5 years, and there is nothing remotely like 
it out here!  Here, you pay a cover fee to go into a "swap meet" (quotes 
because "swap meet" and "cover charge" just don't belong together in my 
vocabulary, but that's what they call them).  Unfortunately, I think a good 
part of the country is more like LA than Dallas in that respect.

You *must* attend the 1st Sat sometime, it's like a techie right-of-passage 
in DFW.  ;-D  And remember, real techies show up at midnight on Friday 
(sometimes even earlier). 

Needless to say, bargain basement surplus/used computers and Linux make a 
good mix.  I often prefer older machines because I figure if it's been around 
for three or four years there's probably a driver for it by now.

Oh and thanks for bringing up the DSL issue -- I'm in the same boat, and 
appreciate all the information!
