[NTLUG:Discuss] SSL and Patents

Hi Greg,

I don't see a reason why RSA or others for that matter would penalise you. The kind of security you want to provide depends upon you. You need not use a commercial product or service to provide security. If you feel that self signed certificate is enough security you want to provide, you might go ahead with it.

Self-signed certificates are also a robust way to provide security, so long as there is no second party involved in the scene. The only problem is whether the user or any other party involved trusts your self-certificate based security. It all depends upon trust when it comes to PKI.

Harshal.

Ok, I've managed to setup a self signed certificate. Now when I deploy
this thing how long until RSA Data Security comes crashing down on me
for patent violations and what other options do I have.

I want to be able to have external users access a few pages using a
secure server but I really don't have the $$$$$$ for some of these over
priced licenses. I haven't looked at the current figures but when I did
about 2 yrs ago they were way out of my league :(

TIA
