[NTLUG:Discuss] UMSDOS vs lin4win

I remember something like that... Lin4Win--the distribution
was some old 'requires at least a 386DX processor'
distribution using kernal 1.x :-)

The Lin4Win option on the mandrake install CD is a different
branch of mandrake install that sets up an unmovable image
file in a windows partition instead of a separate
partition. I used this option on 7.2 and 8.0 (but not
since.) The mandrake site says it is still there.

http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/lnx4win.php3

This option of installing mandrake only appears (at least I
only see it) if you boot into windows first, then insert
the install CD and let windows autostart the CD (or run
whatever autorun.inf has listed in it.) I haven't seen
Lin4Win listed on the boot from CD or boot from floppy
install sequence since 7.0

I don't use it, because it requires a windows boot first (no
lilo), then you must run a command line loadlin Or click
the icon on the windows desktop. Loadlin takes over the
whole box, and as of mandrake 8.0 it did it with very
little warning, meaning stuff that wasn't saved in the
windows session was lost. This means lin4win didn't make a
good xwindows terminal program to run from windows.
