Aftermarket coolers generally attach in other ways. Some
actually mount the same way the Intel stock cooler does, in
which case the above trick might work just as well for removing
them. Some actually have their mounting posts go all the way
through the cartridge, stick out the other side, and snap into
an easily-removable clamp mechanism.
Also, on VERY old Slot1 parts (where the plastic casing and metal
thermal plate covers everything but the contact edge), the
coolers are attached with latching mechanisms that snap onto the
cartridge's thermal plate. These are usually easily removable.
Pentium3's and Celerons generally don't use this anymore, but
PentiumII's do.
When attaching a new cooler, it needs to fit right up against the
thermal plate. Bog-standard grey thermal grease is generally
all you need between the cooler and the thermal plate, or (in a
pinch) you can even go without that.
