Usually, your boot messages will include some sort of detection reporting
for your ethernet device. For instance, on my Debian/powerpc system, the
/var/log/dmesg file contains the following lines about eth0 (please excuse
my paranoia in masking the actual Ethernet MAC address ...):
$ grep eth0 /var/log/dmesg
eth0: Sun GEM (PCI) 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
eth0: Found BCM5421 PHY
eth0: Link is up at 100 Mbps, full-duplex.
eth0: Pause is enabled (rxfifo: 10240 off: 7168 on: 5632)
