I don't know how to do this, it may not be possible.  If you find a way, 
please let us all know.  This would be very handy.  However, it seems there 
should be a way to dynamically modify some of the config, as xvidtune can 
modify the timings in real-time.

Ooohh...that would be nice.  It would finally be more or less "caught up" 
with some of the commercial windowing systems.  As for resolution, there is 
always Ctrl-Alt-<keypad +> and Ctrl-Alt-<keypad - >
