Hmmm...not sure.  I know that kdm can restart the X server, but 
only from the login dialog.

Yes, the XRandR extension.  The groundwork's already in place, 
but card-specific drivers need work to support the extension.  
Maybe some cards already work, I don't know.  AFAICT mine 
doesn't (Geforce2Pro with latest nVidia Linux drivers).
