It's very possible to install Gnome without Nautilus in the RH7.x series-

Simply customize the packages you install, and don't drop in nautilus - 
use MC as your file manager instead.

package nautilus is not installed

[slot0k at fatman slot0k]$ rpm -q gnome-core
gnome-core-1.4.0.4-38

[slot0k at fatman slot0k]$ rpm -q mc
mc-4.5.51-36

I'm not sure if you can do this with Gnome 2.0, as I've yet to see a 
compelling reason to upgrade to 2.0 - my systems are old and slow for 
the most part.
