Also, did you check out how much stuff is in /root?

Most dist's make root's home /root...which means it is under /.

If you've been using it as an area to expand out tarballs of packages you 
are playing with, it's a good candidate for filling up /.

Just as a comparison, I run a pretty fully-loaded Mandrake 8.1 install, and 
my / directory uses just over 100MB of that 1GB I sized the partition to.

/lib is the heavy hitter, with 66MB.
/etc comes in second, at about 14MB.
/sbin and /bin are tied for third, at about 6.5MB each
and the rest comes from:
/root, /tmp, /lost+found, etc.

BTW, /lost+found is another candidate if you've been fsck'ing and getting 
problems.
