Howdy Guys,
Your my last hope! I have been crawling around on google, and beating my
tower to a pulp. I normally update my box via rpm as the need arises or I
know of a particular issue. I have never messed with RedHat's up2date
option. I decided to do so, and I was informed of tons of updates that were
needed.
Being someone who likes to keep his software patched, and updated I decided
it was best to go ahead and update most of it. After a few hours of updating
it locked up. I let it sit there for about 4 hours and no progress. I tried
the various keyboard shortcuts, etc all to no avail. It was hard locked, so
I powered down the box, and I rebooted it.
Upon boot I noticed that it hangs on the part where it is trying to samba
mount. I did recently put some entries into the fstab, and I am pretty sure
they were ok, but it seems to hang there for a bit. (30 minutes or so). Then
it gives some errors, and passes it up, and gives me my Gnome login screen.
No matter what login I try to use, I cannot log in. I can't login as myself,
my wife, root, or any other username I have on the box. I know that the
passwords SHOULD be correct too. I even tried no password for them all and
root with no success.
Since I can't login, I don't know what to do. I think more than just user
permissions may have gotten hosed with the crash, but I am so new I am not
sure. Any suggestion? Has anyone seen anything like this before?
I know that I am not giving alot of detail here, and its honestly because I
don't have it. I don't remember what all packages I was installing, and
updating. I was lazy and let up2date choose it all for me. I don't mind
formatting, and starting over either, however I would much rather figure
this out, and solve a problem. I put alot of time into configuring that box
and its kernel, drivers, software, etc.
Thanks in advance for your time to read this, and consider it. I do
appreciate any advice you might have. Have a great day, and take care.
Paul Drew
