On my AthlonXP, nothing worked except 
nomce
which turned off the Machine Check Exception I was getting.  
I went with the FIC AT31 and Mushkin RAM (the cheap RAM Broke) 
I also turned off the io apic as Alan Cox suggested.  The cpu apic seems
to be ok to use, as does acpi, but these are good suspects.
The things I mention turning off above I also put in my lilo.conf as
boot parameters and compiled out of my kernel (unchecked them in the
xconfig). 
My main problem now is that the vesa driver is 2d only and no ati driver
works for the built in IGP chips.  I understand this may never work, as
apparently ATI is not going to help Linux anymore.  Of course I may have
bad data.
Anyway, I was planning to get a 3d accellerated card later in any case,
so I will be researching further what to buy to get things working.
