If you notice, the UP BROADCAST RUNNING when the cable is connected
changes to UP BROADCAST (but not running) when cable is disconnected

[woody at vader woody]$ /sbin/ifconfig -a
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:02:E3:20:F8:0A
          inet addr:192.168.1.217  Bcast:192.168.1.255 
Mask:255.255.255.0
          UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
