It would appear that the solution lay in scrubbing the disk clean before 
reinstalling anything - I beleive that is in effect what happened with 
the multiple OS installs, including differing partition layouts.  
Finally, "sfdisk" returned "/dev/hda: OK".  The latest install was back 
to RH 7.3 from scratch - not an upgrade - and so far so good.
