Hey, Darin, that did the trick. I was a little thrown off because
YaST2 had written the following lines in modules.conf:

  alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
  alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

and that worked fine when I first installed Suse out-of-the-box
with no kernel recompile.

Anyways, following your suggestion I tweaked modules.conf;
I commented out yast's line:

#  alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1

and I added

  alias snd-card-0 emu10k1

Sound came up at boot. Thanks for the assist!

No, no other cards, but I appreciate the suggestion, may come in
handy someday if I do try multiple cards.
