[NTLUG:Discuss] Stupid question

I am working on a debian 3.0r1 system and I am trying to unzip a zipped 
file.  using the command "gunzip" tells me that the file has an unknown 
suffix and the command quits.  Using the command "unzip" tells me that 
there is no such command.  "bunzip" gets the same response.  Can someone 
remind me how to "unzip" a file?  Yes, it is a linux file, and unzip 
work on my Libranet Debian system, so I am wondering if there is 
something peculiar to strictly debian systems.  TIA, Dennis in Victoria.
