Howdy,
As otherwise pointed out, FIPS is a linux program for working with
partitions. If your machine had Windows installed at the factory, it would
have been set to use the whole disk for Windows. I have used Partition
Magic to safely shrink my Windows partitions, so I won't comment on FIPS.
It was also mentioned that some Futitsu laptops need a special partition
for suspends. Lot of laptops are like that. I have personally setup Dells
and IBM Thinkpads that needed the special partition. On my Thinkpad, the
special partion must be FAT16 and sized 2 meg bigger than the RAM you
have. On the Dell, it was a proprietory partition that only Dell could put
back. I suppose I could have found a way to fix that, but I just lived
with suspend turned off.. If you are not in a hurry, I would suggest you
do a little research about your specific laptp. Let us know the model and
see if anyone here has tried that model. RedHat is not my favorite
distribution, but I do have it on a couple of machines. I suggest you get
RedHat 9, if you can. The Bluecurve interface that RedHat uses seems more
polished in 9 and there are a lot of security fixes.
Once you shrink the Windows partition to leave room for Redhat, you can
just setup RedHat. It will see your Windows partition and install grub
with a menu letting you choose Linux or Windows.
Good luck,
Ralph
