If you have a fairly robust network...i.e., built using UPSes on critical
machines and such, so that it is unlikely all machines would be down at
once, I would use something like Big Brother or mon.
I think Big Brother is at bb4.com these days. I haven't used it since the
early, early days. It had a lot of functionality, though, including the
ability to send alphanumeric pages to your pager using a modem.
I saw it mentioned as "spyware" so I don't know if they added something
like keystroke monitoring or something...but that would be weird, because
all it was was something that would check that certain services were up on
a list of machines and generate a nice webpage for you, optionally emailing
or paging you if anything got into the red.
