I don't remember if anyone's mentioned it here, but Knoppix is an
interesting distribution.  It boots a working desktop from the cd, and
then you can easily install to the hard drive.  At that point you have a
working, apt-gettable Debian installation.  I'm borrowing a laptop for a
couple of weeks, so I wanted to install Debian, but dreaded going
through the installation process for a machine I know nothing about (and
don't have any documentation for).  I popped in the Knoppix cd, it
recognized all the hardware, and soon I had a complete installation, and
could apt-get to my heart's content.

If you haven't seen it, it's worth a look.  Very impressive.
