Howdy,
   I had a system with some kind of embedded S3 video.  I had problems with 
it until I realized that the XFree setup was detecting the wrong video 
chip.  Look at the motherboard and see what is written on the video chip.
   Alternatively, since you say the video is on a card, can you put another 
video card in it?
