Its probably an agreement between Mickeysoft and ATTBI to only actively 
support Microsoft products (with some money or hefty discounts back to 
ATTBI).  In this way ATTBI applies an indirect "Microsoft Tax" to every 
Linux customer that is naive enough to bring up an MS system just to 
read mail.

Too much cynicism?  The maybe the Help Desk is just incompetent, or they 
figure that Linux users do not need support.  If they then configure 
their MTA to support only MS connections, then see previous theory.

Either way, keep the pressure up.  I imagine that they are running UNIX 
based mail servers since MS Exchange would not keep up with the load.
