[NTLUG:Discuss] Is it possible to select specific kernel image for reboot?

Does anyone know if there is a less round about way of specifying a
kernel image other than the default to use when doing a remote reboot,
as opposed to doing some trickery with lilo.conf.
It's just something I'm wondering about, and could be potentially handy
when doing remote management for headless servers.
I vaguely remember hearing something about an effort to make it possible
to do a halfway reboot, but instead of going back to the BIOS, it just
restarts a new kernel image as if a full soft boot had just occured.
Although, this isn't exactly what I have in mind.
Or is there some way to leave a flag of somesort for lilo to select a
specific kernel image.
I know I can work it by changing the default kernel in lilo.conf and
then running lilo to write the boot loader config to disk, but that's a
lot of hassle and it's easy to forget to run lilo before issuing the
reboot command. It's also easy to forget to put it back after the new
image is fully running (for instant fallback reasons).
I guess I want to know because it is one of those "whatever reason I can
come up with" type things. Or is it one of those, "because it's neat"
things?
Thanks,
Stephen Klein
