Thanks for responding, Brian.   Really I've whittled it down as far as I
can.  But it's even more surprising that the RedHat Rescue Diskette would
do the same thing (and no scsi drivers required there).
Has anyone else actually tested their RH8 Rescue diskette?

I think I am going to have roll my own minimal kernal + initrd.  I'll have
no alternative after I remove the "bootstrap" RH8 install.  I left the
/boot partition in ext2fs.
