the actual name of the computer is ratbert.rhumphrey.com but my MX
record is mail.rhumphrey.com.

this says that the box you connected to and did a
RCPT To:<richard at rhumphrey.com>
to does not know that it's supposed to receive mail for
rhumphrey.com.

Is mail.rhumphrey.com really your 'home' computer?
