You see, this is what makes Linux and Open Source in general such a good
thing.  If you do not like the way one vendor packages or supports their
distribution, or perhaps even what they charge... So be it... move on to
the distribution that does things the way you like, or roll your own
even.  This is not an option with Windows or other proprietary
software... You do not like something about MS support, costs,
stability, whatever... Where are you going to go? Anywhere else and you
are forced to change the way you do things, replace all of your
software, etc.  Moving from Red Hat to Suse or Gentoo should require
nothing more than a reinstall, all of your existing software investment
should still work, and you can do things generally in the same manner. 
As more and more applications become LSB certified, instead of distro
certified this become even easier... I dont think there are many distros
out there right now who are not LSB certified.
