[NTLUG:Discuss] Define "top level directory"

I am attempting to install "j2re and link to my Netscape 7.01 browser.

The instructions say to set the NPX_PLUGIN_PATH environment variable 
with the command,
"export NPX_PLUGIN_PATH=<jre>/plugin/i386/ns4"

Here <jre> is the path to the "top level directory"  of your Java 2 
Runtime Environment installation.

My java is installed in "/usr/java/jre1.3.1_02/"

What is a/the top level directory.


Is the symbolic link automatic in Netscape 7.01.    The instructions 
elude that it is.
