[NTLUG:Discuss] mandrake 9.1 GUI logout shutdown and reboot problem

9.1 is my first exposure to Mandrake
Problem:  When using the GUI logout/shutdown/reboot tool the screen goes 
black, but the operation does not appear to complete.

I first encountered this problem on my laptop, and I thought it might be 
a mandrake/laptop kind of thing so I decided to just live with a work 
around - bring up a terminal window, su to root, and issue a shutdown 
command there.

Now I have seen the problem also on a desktop machine, and so I am 
prompted to ask if anyone can offer some advice.
