I did eventually get things working while still
maintaining the NT boot loader.  I actually wound
up having to "dd" the first 512 bytes of a floppy
based grub onto the windows file linux.bin

I also tried: grub --install, but I must have 
a different version of grub than what you are used
to (I have GNU GRUB 0.93), for when I type 

grub --install

I get

grub: option '--install' requires an argument
Try``grub --help'' for more information.

grub --help yields the following

--install-partition=PAR specify stage2 install_partition
[default=0x20000]
