Recompiling is my preference anyway.
 
What would cause software not to work even if recompiled?, except if redhat used some propriatary library or used some simular monkey wrench  ?

The short answer is it depends. There are many funny things that Redhat has
done to itself starting with version 7 (well.. I guess they did funny things
when 5.0 came out too) that may make binaries difficult to use on other
platforms. RH introduces a new twist almost every release. RH 9 has
the new threading model... RH 7 introduced us to their own version of
gcc.

Now... if you don't mind recompiling, source code should still work fine
in most cases.
