with this M$ish way of doing things how is it such a popular distro of Linux?  advertising  and marketing maybe ??

Yes.. exactly. Either a dependency on something (like a newer.. possibly hacked/special
library)... or just paths and such. Usually repairable. However, if it's
dependent upon a hack (for example dependent on a specific version of gcc
for example... like RH's one-off 2.96... or even library functions that
don't exist anywhere else), then you may have a much more difficult time
porting the source.
