Had that mistake too.

I was working from the sendmail page on virtual hosting - I agree it 
seemed overly complicated which is why I asked here instead. :)

that's what I worked out with jack s. offlist.  Also helpful was to make 
sure the line:

FEATURE(`relay_based_on_MX')dnl

was in the .mc file (wasn't originally)

All is working now.  Thanks for your responses.
