[NTLUG:Discuss] another dumb question

I have an outboard vcr connected to a video capture card (bt878 chip). The
audio is fed to the 'line in' jack on the sound card. Any time the vcr is
running AND I have the 'line in' enabled, I hear its audio. So far, so good.
XawTv runs fine, plays the video ok. The snapshot capture works, but not the
'save as avi file'. So, I poked around a bit and found 'streamer' -- I guess it
came with XawTv -- which says "streamer grabs image(s), records movies and
sound". And it works... sorta...
Ok, here's the rub: No audio on save. Not even if I try to only save the audio
(no movie format, just a wav file). I get a slight pop in the speakers on wav
playback, indicating that the software was trying to save audio, but nothing
was there to save. Obviously it is looking at something other than the 'line
in'.
Question: where does the audio from the 'line in' jack show up? I have used the
devices in /dev/sound/ and nothing seems to work.
Normal sound apps work ok... xmms, realaudio, etc.
I am running Mdk9.0 with an add-on soundblaster card.
