While reading mail via your web browser, you click a .exe or .pif
attachment and install the virus on your machine.

Your machine is of course behind the firewall.  Your machine then
attempts to infect other machines on the local network which are also
behind the firewall.

And of course you will not admit to opening the attachment will you?
