My apologies - I was right the first time when I said I didn't really know what was happening in this.

The answer to the particular part is
AND ih.inv_type = '$InvType'
(yep, as simple as that)

Another bug in the code was masquerading as the above problem - I introduced a few extra debugging lines which proved that much, now I am off looking into that.
