[NTLUG:Discuss] Dual Nic's

You will want to have one card up, and the other down. You'll then need a
process that watches the "up" cards ability to communicate to "the world."
(Apply your definition accordingly) This could be as simple as pinging the
router from time to time.
If communication fails, you down the "up" card and bring up the down card. There
is an issue with arp that you'll need to look into, but I can't remember that
off he top of my head.
There is some good documentation about this in "Linux Server Hacks" from
O'Riley. They talk about having two machines do failover via the same IP
address, but you can apply those techniques to just one box. That book rocks.
I'd recommend it to all.

I hope that I am just stupid and missed something, but I tried a similar
setup and the Linux box tanked. Two IP addresses on the same subnet does
not seem to be do-able. I've had problems in Win2K and RH9 trying it. The
box just seems to get confused and doesn't talk to anyone.
