RedHat 5.1 was the first GNU/Linux distribution I ever used, but after a
year or so I grew frustrated with having to resolve dependency issues.
Debian's packaging system eliminated that problem for me. I've heard
that RedHat has improved in this regard, but haven't looked into it.
I like Debian's bug tracking system. There's a program called
"reportbug" that automates the process of reporting bugs. It's
satisfying to receive helpful, rapid responses from the package authors
and maintainers. I assume RedHat has a bug tracking system, but I don't
know anything about it.
Debian has impressed me with its easy availability of high-quality
support. The Debian mailing lists and IRC channels provide help to all
skill levels. I don't know much about RedHat support.
I like the fact that Debian is a non-profit, all-volunteer project.
That's a business model I understand.
