Found and downloaded a driver (ltmodem-kv_2.4.20_4GB-8.26a9-1.i386.rpm) for my Lucent/Agere chip-set based winmodem via www.linmodems.org. 
 
Typing "uname -r" gives my installed kernel version to be 2.4.20-4GB so everything looked ok, BUT when I tried to install the driver (rpm -i...) I got a error message: The driver needs kernel version 2.4.20-4GB!! Thought that was what I had...
 
Checked installed packages and found that installed kernel package version is: 2.4.20-39!! Odd!!!
 
Anyone been down that path and got some good ideas!!???
