[NTLUG:Discuss] ymessenger

Yeah, there is been a protocol change. I read it over some news site few
weeks ago. I think the change took effect before a couple of days. If I
remember correct, 23rd sept.

This change was to block all the other messengers which offer "one IM
for all" solutions. For eg gaim, jabber are a couple of IM's which offer
connectivity to all the other IM services including Yahoo and MSN.

Due to these messengers Yahoo was having serious revenue losses ( at
least this is what they mentioned on the site). The next version of
Yahoo is coming with a new protocol which will be completely
incompatible with the older protocol versions. They believe that this
will drive away all the other messengers from connecting to their
service.

Anybody using the older version of Yahoo will be automatically
disconnected off the Yahoo network due to protocol incompatibility. They
must download the latest version.

To add to that they also mentioned that they would first release the
Windows version and then the UniX's version.

I think you will have to wait for that UNIX one.

Harshal.

Does anyone know where I can find a simple tarball available for the
latest ymessenger for Linux?

I can only find RPM's and Debian packages, on their website.
Unfortunately, I don't have any of these package management systems
available to use.

The version I've been using for a while now came in a tarball with the
binary and a shell-script installer in it. It seems there has been a
protocol change and I can no longer use this older version to connect to
the Yahoo Messenger server(s).
