Hi Brad, Thomas.

Ok, now we know that somebody is confused.  The question is who, what, and why.

Gorky is the name of the machine I am logged into, from a host named "davidson".  So it looks like it is doing the equivalant of setting DISPLAY=localhost:10.0.

I should probaby mention that when I log into "davidson" from gorky, DISPLAY=localhost:10.0 is what is set, and that does work.  However, DISPLAY=localhost:10.0 gives the authentication exception (an earlier thread) when 
logging in from "davidson" to "gorky".

A quick overview of network in question;
gorky = laptop
davidson = workstation with 20" monitor

Logging into davidson (workstation) from gorky (laptop) - GUIs work.
Logging into gorky(laptop) from davidson(workstation) - GUIs do NOT work.

Help?
