Did you create a mount point for it?
You may need to create directory something like /mnt/fwdrive and then
mount it using mount command.

I am trying to use an external firewire hard drive
with RH9 and am having some difficulty.  I can see in
dmesg where it sees the Maxtor drive but it never
assigns it a device such as sda or sdb.  

What am I missing?
