It only talks about how to do the .htaccess stuff (which I needed btw
thanks) but doesn't tell me how to properly load the module.

Did you read the txt file?
/usr/share/doc/mod_auth_mysql-1.11/mod_auth_mysql.txt

See if it had any clues on how to install?
