not sure if this will help at all. 
make sure that you have the latest evolution stuff. It changes 
quite often. 1.4.something is the latest. 

I use red-carpet to keep my stuff up to date. I've used evolution 
for 6+ months and am fairly happy with it.  Just make sure you keep 
it updated. 

As far as number of messages go... I hae 2946 in one Inbox and
4543 in another. These are IMAP folders ( on an IMAP server ) so 
it may be different than your setup.
