Oh, good lord, RedHat is behind the times in this case.  The latest is
1.4.5 - I just upgraded Evolution on my box 2 days ago.

Yes, you can. Take a look at:

http://ximian.com/products/evolution/download.html

The installer will let you decide if you want XD2 or Evolution or all of
it.

I use POP and have 2247 messages in my Inbox so the number of messages
should not be an issue. 

There is a procedure for converting from Outlook to Evolution in the
Ximian Support pages.  It's a long URL so I used makeashorterlink to
